High Country News Updates EJ Coverage

2 February 2010
The High Country News, a magazine subtitled "For people who care about the West", has just published a special series on Green Justice: the Environmental Movement and the Colors of the West. While none of the articles focus specifically on our locality, they all raise issues that are important here. Please check them out and let HCN know how you feel about them.

Central Co-Op Renews Support for CCEJ

28 January 2010
Our good friends at the Central Co-Op have renewed their support for CCEJ, as they have often done in the past. The Co-op seeks to become even more rooted in the community and responsive to its needs, and CCEJ very much appreciates the financial and informational support that it provides. Watch for the Co-Op's new logo to appear in our web pages when it is selected and for signs at our events crediting the Co-op with supplying the food.

Smart Growth Conference will focus on EJ!

14 January 2010
The New Partners for Smart Growth Conference in early February will focus largely on EJ issues in land use planning. The conference organizers are serious about including people of color, so they have established a "Diversity Scholarship Fund", making scholarships and travel stipends available to leaders from lower-income and minority communities, as well as representatives from organizations whose work is primarily focused on social equity and environmental justice. The application deadline is January 8, but funds are going fast so earlier application is advised.

Here is a brochure about the Equitable Development Track.

CCEJ, in partnership with our friends at Seattle King County Public Health and the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, will lead a tour of Environmental Justice communities in South Park and Georgetown as part of the conference. For details, please see our Calendar of Events page or the New Partners webpage.

Majora Carter will speak at the Friday morning plenary session! The session title: "Smart Growth at the Intersection of Environmental Justice and Green Jobs", says it all.

The Climate is Changing - It's Time for Solutions!

CCEJ representatives will speak on Sunday 11/29 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on "How Free Trade Harms Environmental Justice". Please join us there! Let's demonstrate a renewed commitment to justice and send a strong message to Wall Street: "People and the Planet are Not For Sale".

Neighbors Say the Port of Seattle is Making Them Sick

10/08/2009
Our ally Puget Sound Sage has surveyed the people of Georgetown and South Park about how they are affected by truck traffic and other operations of the Port of Seattle. The results are clear: they say the Port is sickening them. CCEJ assisted in conducting the survey last month; we are glad to help publicize the results. KING-5 and KOMO News both covered the story. Stay tuned!

    Update on Climate Change Bill

    10/05/2009
The Boxer-Kerry Climate Bill recently introduced in the Senate contains some minor improvements, such as a partial reinstatement of EPA regulatory authority, over the ACESA bill discussed below, but it remains a Cap & Trade bill with massive offsets provisions, no meaningful emissions reductions targets, and subsidies to oil, coal, nukes and of course, incinerators. We see no significant improvements on EJ issues.

The mission of the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice (CCEJ)
is to achieve environmental and economic justice in low income communities and communities of color.
